We again go to Ex Spy Boss, Tracy Crane, for a discussion of background investigation. Tracy is founder  of Ravenwood Intelligence and assumes the role of Ex Spy Boss at night. He states there is a lot of mis-information about background investigations. Tracy is author of a series of articles titled I Spy, You Spy, Everybody Spies and is a proponent of DIYPI, do it yourself private investigations.

  • 85% of our defense budget is spent on contractors
  • The most difficult information to obtain is criminal records
  • Background investigations are only a starting point
  • 75 – 80 % of background research information is available online to average person
  • Private databases use cell phone information, credit card information, etc to place individuals in time
  • List of things you cannot get for background: HIPPA – medical records, bank records, credit, telephone records, IRS records, birth certificates and more
  • but… it can be obtained illegally
  • Background investigations: you get what you pay for
  • A quality background check requires releases for all record types, ie. HIPPA, bank, credit, phone, etc.
  • Using a missle to eliminate a mouse
  • Company requiring quality background checks should have HR attorney as their best friend
  • If you really have lots of assets to protect, money must be spent on quality background checks
  • Policies and procedures offer some protection from litigation
  • Tracy recommends field reps pay for their own FBI and state background check
  • Private Investigation business is growing
  • Why trust them, make them prove it
