There is a growing volume of unpaid debt in the United States and it consists of commercial and individual debt.  As with any crisis, there are a lot companies tying to take advantage of the situation. There are con artists, both individuals and businesesses, that makes matters worse for everyone involved.

If you are involved in the mortgage field services business, either inspections or preservation, you should be prepared to investigate all companies that contact you for work; and to protect yourself, you must familarize yourself with the various laws that  regulate the fair debt collection services and protect debtors.

It is quite common for debt collectors to stretch the interpretation and in many cases smash the law and you, even as an independent contractor, can unknowlingly become involved in quite an ugly scene.

The Fair Debt Collection Act documents will provide you the necessary detail on what debt collection strategies and practices are permitted, and which are not.  As a contractor, think twice before taking assignments from new or unknown companies.  Talk with your legal advisor and perform your activities in the field as if they will be rewound in court and used in your defense – or your conviction.

Defend yourself from the outset of every job and check the background of every company you will work for – there are plenty of resources on the Internet to find out which companies seem to be involved in legal action more than the norm.
